Alderney Animal Welfare Society La Val, Alderney, Channel Islands The Alderney Animal Welfare Society was founded in 1953 by Miss Margaret Bunting. Miss Bunting was horrified at the way unwanted animals were being disposed of and decided that something had to be done to assist them. Funds were scarce and it was only through her hard work, persistence and an appeal via the Jersey Animals' Shelter that she was able to purchase equipment to set up a charitable euthanasia service in Alderney. The facilities provided by the Alderney Animal Welfare Society have since been developed. The Society now offers veterinary treatment, boarding facilities and general day-to-day care for animals and advice to the public. Guernsey Animal Aid Forest, Guernsey, Channel Islands Guernsey Animal Aid is based at the Tudor Lodge Deer Farm in Guernsey. We are run by a group of hard working volunteers. We are a completely non-profit organisation and receive no states funding so we rely wholy on the generosity of people like you. The standing orders we receive enable us to to continue helping animals in need. We offer a 24/7 hour call out service and never turn an animal away. We operate a non-destruct policy, we would never put an animal down unless advised it would be best to do so by a vet. Guernsey Animal Aid was founded in 1998 by Sue Vidamour as an answer to the feral cat problem in Guernsey. The cats were interbreeding and this led to a lot of pain and suffering for them. Prior to this Sue had been rehoming horses and dogs for 6 years. In 1998 there were many feral cat colonies on the island so Sue held a meeting about the problem and Guernsey Animal Aid was formed. Since this first meeting over 700 feral cats have been neutered or spayed and the kittens re-homed. Now thanks to the efforts of Sue and the rest of the Guernsey Animal Aid gang, feral cats are a shrinking problem We have links all over the U.K. with sanctuaries such as Bath RSPCA cats and dogs home, Bolton RSPCA, Sheffield, Red Wings Horse Sanctuary, Bristol Horse Sanctuary and Mill House Animal Sanctuary etc. Due to the small amount of land we have, these links enable us to send animals on to England so that we can continue to rescue and help more animals in Guernsey. The sanctuaries in England then either find homes for the animals or keep them to live out the rest of their days happily. The role now, as in those early days, of preventing cruelty and promoting kindness to animals, through education, is as strong as ever. So much is achieved - through qualified and dedicated staff, our own welfare officer, friends and supporters throughout the island and through our association with the RSPCA. The Kennels, Cattery and Miscellaneous Animals Unit, offer a caring environment so that cruelly treated, unwanted or neglected pet animals may be found new, loving homes. Staff at the shelter will endeavour to match the needs of the animals in their care with those of the potential adopters so animals that may have had a bad experience are secure for the rest of their lives. The GSPCA has its own 'Animal Hospital'. This is a very busy unit and is managed by dedicated, specialist staff. It is constantly in use all year round with domestic pets as well as sick and injured wildlife, giving the GSPCA an opportunity to ensure every animal is offered the best care. The GSPCA cares for animals in the community and their own Welfare Officer is on hand as a compassionate friend and a voice for animals, offering assistance with behavioural problems and support to families who are experiencing difficulties. The shelter is able to offer assistance with transport, and offers a cremation service for that time when a much-loved companion animal dies. Second to none, is the GSPCA's ability to provide Boarding, Quarantine and sound advice to families who wish to travel. An ambulance, which has been specially fitted out, approved and licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture, for this purpose is available to provide transport from UK ports and airports. When Jayne discovered that puppies born in council pounds were being killed because they could not find homes for them she setup Pound Puppy Rescue. Having rescued the puppies she could not leave the hundreds of adult/ancient dogs and cats, and the kittens at the pounds to die just because they did not have a home to go to. Then she found that breeders would kill their rejects so she took those in too. AND then there are the other animals! We do not have a 'rescue centre'. The pets stay in foster homes looked after by our volunteers in the area around Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth, Dorset until they find a suitable home. Hundreds of healthy dogs are being killed in Wales and Yorkshire every week for want of a home. I am told that some councils in Wales do not even try to rehome strays - if they are unclaimed after 7 days they are killed! Jersey Rescue Dogs Jersey, Channel IslandsJersey Rescue Dogs is a member of the Association of Jersey Charities. Jersey Rescue Dogs are based on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. We rescue, foster and rehome dogs from the UK and Ireland and if required will assist with the rehoming of any local dogs. In accordance with the Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004, we are a registered sanctuary who offer a safehaven for a mixture of sighthounds. Here in Jersey we are in the fortunate position of not having 'dog pounds' and stray dogs which is why we bring rescues over from Southern Ireland and the UK who make great family pets. Greyhound Rescue Jersey Jersey, Channel Islands Greyhound Rescue Jersey is a member of the Association of Jersey Charities, Animal Shelter Affiliate and Jersey branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust. In 1995, we read an article in a newspaper on the plight of racing greyhounds after their racing days were over. This prompted us to take on our first greyhound, a 6 year old male. Chappie arrived on 4th July and after 3 baths, we discovered he was white and brindle! Having raced the length and breadth of the UK, he so deserved a happy retirement. Tragically, it was short lived and at the age of 7 he was diagnosed with a calcification of the spine and we had to put him to sleep. Having discovered that 10,000 greyhounds like Chappie needed homes each year, when approached by the national organiser of the Retired Greyhound Trust to establish a local Rescue Centre here in Jersey, it seemed the obvious path to follow. We are currently celebrating our 12th Anniversary having homed 117 dogs here in Jersey, Guernsey, Sark and Alderney. Dogs needing homes. Jersey SPCA Animals Shelter St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands The Jersey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) was founded in 1868 with the intention of attempting to change public attitudes towards animals. The Jersey Animals' Shelter itself was founded in 1913 by Miss Frances Elizabeth Wilson, who was appalled by the number of domestic animals found washed up on the Island's beaches, having been drowned by owners unable to care for them. In 1925, the JSPCA formed a Committee to assist Miss Wilson in her work and in 1930, the Society purchased the present property on St Saviours Road. In 1936, the JSPCA and Jersey Animals' Shelter amalgamated. This was a lifelong wish of Miss Wilson and took place shortly before her death. Regardless of the reason or circumstances for being unable to keep a pet, the JSPCA Animals' Shelter will take in all unwanted companion animals and find them new and loving homes. Every animal is thoroughly health-checked and temperament assessed before being placed in a new home. Most animals are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped (as appropriate for the species) before becoming available for re-homing and all cats are blood tested to establish whether they have been infected with Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Once a prospective new owner has been found, a home visit will be carried out to ensure the animal's requirements can be met. The Shelter also runs a Foster Animal Scheme. This Scheme offers reduced cost veterinary treatment for life to elderly animals re-homed from the Shelter or to animals the Shelter re-homes with on-going medical conditions, such as Diabetes Mellitus. By way of this Scheme, it helps to increase the chances of older animals finding new homes. There are often lots of dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents needing new homes.
